NINES By Joshua French

Picture Spotting and Understanding Nines

Belief
Nines believe that they have uncontrollable impulses and the best thing to do is to bury them and let others take control. This makes them seem very easy-going and friendly on the surface but means they have lost contact with their total presence. Nines can be free when they believe that everything within them is acceptable and nothing has to be suppressed.

EIGHTS BY Joshua French

Spotting and Understanding Eights

Picture

Belief

Eights believe that it is up to them to be a powerful force in the world. They can be free when they accept that they don’t need to try to impose themselves.  If they accept the present moment and go with the flow of the universe, then they have found true power.

SIXES BY Joshua French

Spotting and Understanding Sixes

Belief

Sixes believe that the world is dangerous so making allies is important. They can be free when they accept that although there will always be unknowns, that it's always possible to feel  safe and secure in the present moment. They don’t need to make any connections apart from connecting to (and accepting) the power of now.

Appearances

Sixes are difficult to identify in regards to a typical style. They will very often wear what the social group they have allied themselves with would wear. Hence, you can have fashion-conscious Sixes, bohemian Sixes, body-building Sixes, sporty Sixes and so on. There is a nervous, uncertain energy about them that is usually apparent, although sometimes this can seem quiet and giggly, sometimes quite boisterous and jumpily aggressive.  In the video below, it is Meg Tilly who is the six, not Kevin Costner.Friends, Family and Other Relationships
As with twos, friends, family and relationships are central to a Six’s life and they can be wonderfully thoughtful and helpful. However, the Six doesn’t need demonstrations of love and appreciation – they simply want to do what is necessary to keep the alliance together. There is usually some insecurity though and a needing to test the boundaries – so they can be sarcastic and aloof sometimes to see how others react.

Difficulties

Sixes struggle with fear and find it hard to relax. They like to be around people so if they are alone they can become more anxious and dejected. There is a tendency to align with a certain group and then see others as enemies so they can have a limited, black-and-white worldview. My grandma, for example, would often say that mothers going to work was the reason children were so badly  behaved in schools.

As Children

Sixes are often helpful children and from an early age they are keen on making special groups of friends and joining clubs in and after school. Sixes are focused on rules and regulations of the organisation they are in so will usually be well-behaved, though they might occasionally test the boundaries.

At Work

As well as rules, Sixes are very aware of authority figures and have a tendency to complain to others about the authority figure in their workplace – though they would normally be too fearful to confront them directly. Work is a major part of a Six’s life as they like to identify themselves with an organisation to make them feel safer… they may work hard and well but normally wouldn’t try to rise to the upper levels of management, which would feel too risky.

Talking Style

Sixes have a nervy, quick style of talking which may be witty and giggly or pejorative and grouchy.

FIVES by Joshua French

Spotting and Understanding Fives

Picture

Belief

Fives believe they are vulnerable and that understanding it is important so they gather knowledge throughout their lives. They find relief when they accept that there are things that are ultimately incomprehensible to the human mind, such as the universe and their true selves. They can develop faith that it is a benevolent universe and everything is as it should be.

Appearances

Fives can seem like minds which happen to have bodies carrying them around, meaning they can walk around with their head leading the way, sometimes giving a stooped posture. They very often wear glasses, which makes me wonder if their fixation to understand the world around them has led them to strain and distort their vision at an early age. Their clothes and hairstyle can be noticeably eccentric as they like to feel separate from society’s conventions and enjoy showing they don’t need to fit in.

PictureFriends, Family and Relationships

Although Fives can be reserved and distant around strangers, they are known to closer acquaintances for being vocal about their interests and opinions, sometimes talking at great lengths about subjects that others are losing interest in. This can make others reluctant to spend lots of time with a Five. They can be disdainful of others who hold beliefs that differ from their own. Because they hold things at a distance, it can take time to express deeper feelings about someone they love. It can seem like they don’t really know how to express themselves (even with someone they have been in a relationship with for years) .

Difficulties

Fives are very sensitive and emotional people, but they have distanced themselves so much from others, they can feel at a loss for how to act in the world. This can manifest in social awkwardness and physical withdrawing from the world, staying at home and thinking about things. They often see that the society they live in is flawed and don’t know how to find their place in it... the safest way being to surround themselves with the things they are interested in (computers, literature, moth collections…).

As Children

From an early age, Fives show the obsessive need to understand and be experts in certain fields, so they are often quiet, thoughtful children who are avid readers, coin collectors, computer game players… whatever arouses their interest.

At Work

PictureIf Fives find a job that is aligned with their interests then they can really excel because it is second nature to them to strive to be the best in their field. A major problem that can arise is that Fives feel distant from society’s conventions and think it would be mad to try and  conform to expectations. Therefore, some fives can spend long periods of time not working… unemployed, travelling, staying on people’s sofas.

Talking Style

Fives may be distant but once they get going on a subject they know a lot about, it can seem like there is no stopping them. In conversation, Fives like to demonstrate their superior knowledge and use a wider vocabulary than most.

FOURS by Joshua French

Spotting and Understanding Fours

Belief

Fours believe that they are somehow extraordinary and use their emotions and imagination to strengthen this, while also seeking recognition from others. They can find freedom when they learn to appreciate the simple, ordinary parts of life and accept that they are no more special than anyone else.  They can find joy and meaning from just being present with what is, rather than an idealised version of how they should be.

Appearances

Fours are aware of how others perceive them but think of themselves as above vanity. They like to make sure they look natural and unaffected. Their clothes may be bohemian, elegant or from charity shops/thrift stores, but they will aim to project an image of someone who is naturally stylish, not trying too hard. Fours often have a darkness about their aura which can manifest in dark clothes and, especially in teenagers, in the stereotype of the goth or ‘emo’. You can spot fours because their habitual expression is often lost and contemplative, searching inside to understand why they are suffering.

Friends Family and Other Relationships,

Fours are intense with people they know well and can spend a lot of time talking about themselves, their dreams and how much they are suffering, so friends and family can find this draining. They can also be great fun and come up with creative games and ideas. Jealousy and insecurity is a feature of a four’s loving relationships – they can find it difficult if a partner is ‘doing better’ than them in some way, and at their worst can imagine that their partner is having affairs or planning to leave them, and even search for evidence for this.

Difficulties

Fours are particular attached to suffering. They feel that they are elite but that somehow this is not being recognised, because they still have to work at ‘ordinary’ jobs for example, or haven’t had much interest in their latest artistic project. The focus of attention is on what is missing and out of habit, suffering itself becomes their mark of being special, their identity. They can stay at home, feeling too self-conscious and depressed to get out into the world and meet people and get things done.

As children

As a teacher, I have found some Fours very easy to spot because they are often the students who are painfully shy in class and find it excruciating to have to speak in front of others. Others fours children are more confident and cheerful, but still relatively quiet and can seem ditzy and/or introspective.

At Work

A Four's dream job involves an artistic expression of their inner vision. Given time, Fours are known to come up with creative and effective ways of working in any field. They can be inefficient though, because they are feelers rather than quick thinkers. Fours can give the impression they don’t feel happy at the workplace, as if it is below them and they don’t want to be there. They can also be self-conscious about mistakes and seem over-sensitive and embarrassed if they get pointed out.

Talking Style

Fours can be quite easy to identify because when they talk they reveal a lot about themselves and their feelings, even with strangers they have started to chat to on a train journey. There is often a melancholy tone to the voice. Sometimes there's also a tendency to pretend to be more naïve than they really are.  This could be an attention-seeking strategy that also encourages others to be gentle and sensitive around them. I've noticed it in my mother, myself and other fours.
